How do CyTOF systems discriminate cells from other debris and unbound probes?

The cell-staining protocol includes washing steps that ensure that unbound probes are removed from the sample prior to loading on the CyTOF┬« instrument. As part of the protocol, samples are stained with a nucleic acid intercalator that tags all nucleated events with iridium, and thus high iridium staining intensity discriminates cells from debris.
