CD39, also known as ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 1 (ENTPD1), is an integral membrane protein with 2 transmembrane domains and exists as a homotetramer. E-NTPDases are ectoenzymes that convert nucleoside tri- and diphosphates (NTDPs) into nucleoside monophosphate (NMP), thereby removing cytotoxic ATP and ADP. CD39 is expressed in B cells, subsets of dendritic cells, and most monocytes. In addition, CD39 along with another E-NTPase, CD73, is expressed on CD4+CD25+ immunosuppressive regulatory T (Treg) cells. Tregs from CD39-deficient mice show impaired suppressive properties in vitro and in vivo.
