CD115 is encoded by the c-fms proto-oncogene and belongs to the class III receptor tyrosine kinase family. CD115 is a cell surface receptor identified for colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF-1), a major cytokine regulating differentiation, proliferation, and migration of myeloid lineage cells. CD115 is expressed by monocyte, macrophage, osteoclast, and some epithelial cells. IL-34 has more recently been identified as another CD115 ligand with comparable biological effects. In humans, CD115 and CSF-1 overexpression are frequent in a wide variety of epithelial tumors and have been correlated with more aggressive diseases and poor prognosis.
