H2A.X is a 14 kDa basal histone and a member of the H2 histone family. This nuclear protein is required for checkpoint-mediated cell cycle arrest and DNA repair following double-stranded DNA breaks. DNA damage, resulted from ionizing radiation, UV-light, or radiomimetic agents, leads to rapid phosphorylation of H2A.X at Ser139.
