TRA-1-60 is expressed on undifferentiated human embryonic stem (ES) cells, induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells, and embryonic germ (EG) cells. The epitope, which is lost upon cell differentiation, is a neuraminidase-resistant carbohydrate expressed on podocalyxin, a member of CD34-related family of sialomucins. Podocalyxin is a transmembrane keratan-sulfated glycoprotein, which has been implicated in the development of aggressiveness in a variety of cancers including breast and prostate cancer.
