The JS11 monoclonal antibody specifically binds to CD55, a 60–70 kDa glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored single-chain glycoprotein that is also known as decay-accelerating factor (DAF). CD55 is expressed on all cells in contact with serum, including all hematopoietic cells and vascular endothelium. CD55 can also exist in a soluble form, which is present in plasma. CD55 is thought to contribute to the protection of cells from the damage by autologous complement through inhibition of the amplification steps of the complement cascade. There is also evidence that CD55 interacts with CD97 and can bind to coxsackie and echovirus.
