Interferon-gamma (IFNγ) is a cytokine that plays a critical role in innate and adaptive immunity against infectious pathogens and for tumor control. Certain microbes stimulate NK and T cells to produce IFNγ, which acts on dendritic cells and macrophages to induce IL-12 secretion. IFNγ is primarily produced by activated NK and NKT cells, activated CD8 T cells, and Th1-polarized CD4 T cells.
