Anti-Cross GFAP (GA5)-143Nd—100 Tests

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a 49 kDa cytoskeletal type III intermediate filament first isolated from multiple sclerosis plaques. Intermediate filaments maintain cell stability as well as cell shape. GFAP additionally plays a role in the modulation of cell motility, proliferation, vesicle trafficking and interaction between astrocytes and neurons and is a main component in astrocytes of the central nervous system. Following acute injury of the brain, but also progressive central nervous system degeneration, astrocytes are activated resulting in reactive gliosis. Activated astrocytes express enhanced GFAP levels and exist in many neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
